CALIFORNIA STATE WOMEN'S APPOINTMENT PROJECT
NWPC-California will have the ear and
eye of the new administration.
The goal of this project is to present to the next governor and their transition team binders containing the names and resumes of women who are interested in serving within the new administration in order to provide a significant pool of qualified women to serve as appointees. We will recruit women from all backgrounds and for all level of positions – high level, paid and volunteer. Many of these boards and commissions need women to serve in public positions, so women should not think they need to be an expert in a specific area to apply. For more information, click here. September Dinner Program-Ranked Choice Voting

Monday, September 13, 2010 6:00-7:30pm
*New Location*
Milano Restaurant, 3425 Grand Ave., Oakland
Our Dinner Meeting Series Continues on the 2nd Monday of September with Ranked Choice Voting at NEW Location
Change is coming! Starting in November 2010, voters in Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro will use Ranked-Choice Voting to elect most local officials. Come find out the details of the process and the implications for our political system.
Ranked-Choice Voting (also known as instant runoff voting) allows voters to rank a first, second and third choice candidate for a single office. This makes it possible to elect local officials by majority vote without the need for a separate run-off election. Ranked-Choice Voting does not affect the election of County, State and federal officials or the approval or rejection of ballot measures.
Two speakers will present their perspectives on the scope and potential of ranked choice voting, and how it has worked in other cities. Gautam Dutta, recently with the New America Foundation, now has a private law practice in election law. The second speaker is TBA.
Due to Labor Day, our Dinner Series will be the second Monday, September 13. We will be gathering at Milano Restaurant, 3425 Grand Avenue (at Mandana) in Oakland, 6-7:30pm. Please plan to arrive at 6pm so you can order your dinner before the program begins. Milano has a small parking lot, but there is plenty of free parking on the street or in the municipal parking lot a block and a half away after 6pm. To enter the municipal lot: as you are coming from the Grand Lake theater, at the first light turn right into the entry way (between the Grand Bakery and Bankok Palace Thai restaurant).
We will resume meeting the first Monday in October with our highly popular "Baffled by the Ballot" program. There are many hotly contested initiatives on the ballot; we will be having pro and con speakers with time for your probing questions. This program will be at the Buttercup Grill in downtown Oakland on Broadway at 3rd Street, 6-8pm, Oct 4.
For more information, contact Program Co-Chair Ellen Augustine at 510-428-1832; or Co-Chair Miriam Rokeach, 510-658-3805.
SAVE THE DATE: Sept. 12, 1:00pm-5:00pm, Endorsement Meeting, Location to be announced soon along with Candidate schedule.
